Spain residency health insurance over 70

Applicants over 70 should check private health insurance options early because availability, pricing and eligibility can be more limited. If the applicant is aged 70 to 75, private health insurance may still be possible depending on applicant details and eligibility. If the applicant is over 75, we do not currently work with insurers that offer new private health insurance policies for applicants over 75 — see residency over 75.

Why exact age matters

Private cover from 70 to 75, and after 75

Between 70 and 75, options exist but are more limited, and the exact age and applicant details affect eligibility — so it helps to give the precise age. Eligible pensioners may use an S1 or public healthcare instead of private cover. Non-EU residence visa applicants often need private cover for the file where another route does not apply. An existing private policy may be able to continue, depending on the insurer.

Couples, certificate and renewals

In a couple, each applicant's age is assessed individually — a partner aged 70–75 may still request options while a younger partner is assessed separately. Where private cover is used, each applicant usually needs their own certificate and, where requested, proof of payment. At renewal, evidence may need updating. After 75, new private cover is not available through us — over-75 applicants may rely on public healthcare, S1 where applicable, existing cover or private pay-as-you-go healthcare.
