Health insurance for language students in Spain

Language students can still use the Student Visa route in Spain, but the course, school, duration and application route should be checked carefully. If you are applying for an initial Student Visa based on a language course, you may need to apply through the Spanish consulate in your country of residence before travelling. Since the 2025 rule changes, applying from inside Spain for language studies is more restricted — if you are already in Spain, check specialist immigration advice before relying on a language course route. For health insurance, the policy should normally match the course period and provide certificate-ready documentation where required. See the language course health insurance page.

Course & route

Course length, application route and age

Course length affects the route: a course under 90 days may fall under short-stay rules rather than a long-stay Student Visa; 90–180 days sits in between and should be checked; and over 180 days usually points to a long-stay Student Visa, which normally needs private health insurance with a certificate covering the study period. The application route matters too — initial language-study applications are generally consulate-first since the 2025 changes, so we do not encourage relying on an inside-Spain initial application without specialist advice. Most student-specific policies are available up to age 35; over 35, a general visa-suitable 12-month renewable policy is usually the route, subject to eligibility.

Certificate, dates and school insurance

The policy should match the course period so the certificate dates align with the application, and some applications also want proof of payment. Language school or academy insurance may be offered, but should be checked for clear Spain cover and a suitable certificate. A common mistake is buying cover that does not run for the whole course, or assuming an inside-Spain application is straightforward for language studies.
