Do language students need health insurance for Spain?

Language students may need health insurance if their course requires a Spanish Student Visa or study stay authorisation. The correct insurance depends on your course length, application route, student age, consulate or immigration office, and whether private health insurance is required.

We help language students review private health insurance options for Spain, including certificate-ready cover where required.

Course length

Why course length matters for language student insurance

Language course students should check health insurance early because the course length can affect the visa route and the documents needed. Common situations include short courses under 90 days; courses between 90 and 180 days; courses over 180 days; full academic year language programmes; long-term Spanish courses; study stay renewals; language courses followed by university study; and mature students taking a career-change course.

A suitable course

What type of language course can support a Student Visa?

Not every language course will support a Spanish Student Visa application. The course should normally be in person, organised through an authorised or recognised centre, and suitable for the study visa route.

For Spanish or co-official language studies, many applicants are expected to enrol with an official language school or a centre accredited by the Instituto Cervantes. Some consulates and schools also refer to full-time programmes of around 20 hours per week.

Before buying health insurance, check that your language course, school and course length are suitable for the visa route you are using. This page covers the insurance side only — confirm the visa route with your school or a qualified immigration professional.

2025 rule change

Can you apply from inside Spain for a language course Student Visa?

This needs careful checking. Since the 2025 immigration changes (from 20 May 2025), initial Student Visa applications based on language courses are generally more restricted from inside Spain.

If you are applying for the first time based on a language course, you may need to apply from the Spanish consulate in your country of residence before travelling. If you already hold a student authorisation in Spain and are renewing or extending your studies, the route may be different.

We can help with the health insurance side, but you should confirm the visa route before arranging cover. This is general guidance, not legal or immigration advice.

Spanish courses

Health insurance for Spanish language courses in Spain

Many students come to Spain specifically to study Spanish. If your Spanish language course requires a Student Visa, health insurance should be arranged around the course dates and visa documentation. Check the school or academy name; course start date; course end date; visa appointment deadline; required cover period; certificate wording; whether no-copay wording is requested; whether repatriation wording is requested; and whether proof of payment is required.

Schools & academies

Health insurance for private language schools and academies

Students attending private language schools or academies may still need private health insurance for the visa file. Do not assume school-provided cover is enough without checking whether it is health insurance or accident insurance; whether it covers healthcare in Spain; whether it covers the full course period; whether it provides a certificate; whether it has deductibles or reimbursement terms; whether it includes no-copay wording where required; and whether it includes proof of payment where requested.

Under 90 days

Health insurance for language courses under 90 days

Short language courses under 90 days do not normally require a Spanish Student Visa, although some nationalities may need a Schengen visa. Students may still want medical cover for their stay in Spain, but the insurance requirement will be different from a long-stay Student Visa.

If you are applying for a visa or your school has requested health insurance, check the exact requirement before buying cover.

90–180 days

Health insurance for 90 to 180-day language courses

Language courses over 90 days may require a study visa route, depending on nationality, course type and consulate instructions. If private health insurance is required, the policy should normally cover the full study period and provide certificate-ready documentation for the application.

Over 180 days

Health insurance for language courses over 180 days

For language courses longer than 180 days, students normally need more complete documentation and, once in Spain, may need to apply for a TIE (Foreigner Identity Card) if the authorised stay exceeds six months. Many consulates note that where the study stay is longer than six months, the visa is valid for an initial period and the student must apply for the Foreigner Identity Card within one month of entry.

The insurance should be checked around the full course dates; visa or residence period; certificate wording; no-copay wording where required; proof of payment where requested; and renewal needs if the course continues.

Mature students

Health insurance for mature language students

Language students are not always young university-age applicants. Many people study Spanish in Spain later in life. For applicants aged 30 to 35, student-specific health insurance may be available. For applicants over 35, most student-specific policies are not normally the route. Instead, we help review general visa-suitable private health insurance options for Spain, usually arranged as 12-month renewable policies.

See cover for language students over 30 and over 35.

Certificate

Health insurance certificate for language course Student Visa

If health insurance is required for your language course visa application, you may need a certificate or proof of cover. A useful certificate should usually show the student name, insurer name, policy start date, policy end date or cover period, healthcare cover in Spain, cover aligned with course dates, no-copay wording where required, no waiting period wording where required, repatriation wording where requested, and proof of payment where requested.

See the student visa health insurance certificate guide.

No-copay

Do language students need no-copay health insurance?

Some Student Visa or study stay applications may request health insurance without copayments, deductibles or excesses. If your instructions mention sin copago, no copayments, no deductibles or no excesses, request no-copay options before buying.

See no-copay health insurance for Spanish visas.

Wording

No waiting periods and repatriation for language students

Some language course Student Visa applications may request no-waiting-period wording or repatriation cover. If either wording appears in your checklist, consulate instructions, school instructions or adviser notes, tell us before arranging cover.

See no-waiting-period health insurance and repatriation cover.

Before NIE

Can language students get health insurance before having an NIE?

Yes, many language students arrange private health insurance before having an NIE because proof of insurance may be needed for the visa application. Depending on insurer rules, passport details may be used first and the NIE added later where needed.

See health insurance without an NIE.

Existing cover?

Can language students use school, travel or international insurance?

Language students may already have cover through a school, travel insurer or international insurer, but it should be checked carefully before relying on it for a Spanish Student Visa. It may create issues if it only covers emergencies; is travel-style cover; does not clearly cover healthcare in Spain; does not match the course dates; is reimbursement-based; has deductibles or excesses; cannot provide suitable certificate wording; no-copay wording is missing where requested; or proof of payment is not available.

See travel vs visa health insurance, international vs Spanish visa health insurance, and university insurance for a Student Visa.

Renewal

Health insurance for language course renewal

If you are renewing a Student Visa or study stay authorisation for a language course, you may need to show continued healthcare access. Renewal health insurance should be checked for active cover; updated certificate; renewal period; course continuation dates; proof of payment where requested; no-copay wording where required; and whether your current policy is still suitable.

See student visa renewal health insurance.

Urgent

Need language course health insurance urgently?

Urgent language student insurance enquiries are common when the visa appointment is close, the course start date is near, or a student discovers that travel or school insurance may not be suitable. For urgent help, include your course type; course start and end dates; application country or consulate; appointment or submission deadline; student date of birth; preferred policy start date; whether you have an NIE; whether no-copay wording is required; whether repatriation is required; whether you already bought insurance; and whether your certificate has been questioned.

Since the 2025 immigration rule changes (from 20 May 2025), an initial Student Visa based on a language course is generally applied for through the Spanish consulate in your country of residence, rather than from inside Spain on a tourist stay.
