Studying in Spain? We help students, parents, language course students, university students, exchange students and mature students review private health insurance options for Spain.
Takes under two minutes · English-speaking support · No obligation
Many students in Spain need health insurance either for a Spanish Student Visa, study stay authorisation, university or course requirement, renewal, or private healthcare access during their studies.
The right type of health insurance depends on the student's nationality, course type, course length, age, application route, current healthcare access and whether visa documentation is required.
For Spanish Student Visa applications, ordinary travel insurance is usually not enough. Students often need private health insurance that covers healthcare in Spain, provides suitable proof of cover and matches the required study period.
Please note: we do not currently work with insurers that offer new visa-suitable private health insurance policies for applicants over 75. This is unusual for student applications, but if relevant, you may need to explore public healthcare access, existing cover or specialist residency advice.
This is general insurance guidance, not legal, medical, education or immigration advice.

Students coming to Spain through an exchange, placement or international programme.

Applicants who are not sure whether their course, visa or university requires private health insurance.
Health insurance can be important for students in Spain for several reasons. Some students need it for a visa. Others need it for a course, university, renewal or personal healthcare access.
A suitable student health insurance policy can help with Spanish Student Visa applications, study stay authorisations, student renewals, university or course enrolment requirements, language course documentation, exchange programme requirements, private healthcare access in Spain, medical certificate or proof of cover requests, and parent peace of mind.
See our main Student Visa health insurance page.
If you need a Spanish Student Visa, your health insurance should usually be chosen around the visa requirement, not just the lowest-priced student policy available.
Depending on the consulate, immigration office, course type and study period, Student Visa health insurance may need to show healthcare cover in Spain; cover for the required study period; an insurer authorised to operate in Spain, where required; no copayments where required; no reimbursement-only structure where required; no waiting periods where required; a clear policy start date; a named student applicant; a health insurance certificate or proof of cover; and proof of payment where requested.
See our guides to Student Visa health insurance and Student Visa health insurance requirements.
Not every student enquiry is purely about a visa. Some students already live in Spain, already have their documentation, or simply want private healthcare access while studying.
Private health insurance can be useful for students who want private GP appointments, access to specialists, diagnostic tests where covered, private hospitals and clinics, video consultations where available, English-speaking support where available, peace of mind while away from home, cover for the full academic year, and easier healthcare access during exams or course commitments.
If the policy is needed for a visa or residence process, make sure it is selected around the documentation requirement, not just general private healthcare access.
Language students may need health insurance for a Spanish language course, especially if applying for a Student Visa or study stay authorisation. See our guide to language course health insurance.
University students may need health insurance for a degree, master's, postgraduate, doctorate or university exchange programme. See our guide to health insurance for university students.
Exchange students may be offered programme insurance, but this should be checked carefully before relying on it for a visa or residence application. See our guide to health insurance for non-EU university students.
Students coming for training, internships or other approved study-related programmes may need cover that matches the application route.
Older students may need different insurance options from younger students, especially if standard student products have age limits. See our guides for students over 30 and over 35.
International students should check health insurance early because requirements can vary depending on nationality, visa route, course type and whether the student is applying from abroad or from inside Spain.
International students should check whether a visa is needed; whether private health insurance is required; whether public healthcare access applies; whether university insurance is enough; whether a certificate is needed; whether the policy covers the full course period; whether the policy can be arranged before an NIE; and whether no-copay or no-reimbursement wording is required.
See our guide to health insurance for non-EU students in Spain.
Mature students may need a different insurance route from younger students. Some student health insurance products are designed for younger age groups, while older students may need broader private health insurance.
This can apply to students over 30, students over 35, postgraduate students, master's students, doctorate students, career changers, language students, retirees studying in Spain, and students applying with dependants. Mature students should check age limits, medical questionnaire requirements, certificate wording and whether the policy matches the visa or study authorisation route.
Students applying for a visa, study authorisation, renewal or university requirement may need written proof of health insurance. This may be a certificate, policy document or proof of cover.
A student health insurance certificate should usually show the student name, insurer name, policy number where available, policy start date, cover period, healthcare cover in Spain, type of policy, no-copayment wording where relevant, insurer details, and dependants where included. If a certificate is needed, ask before buying the policy.
See our guide to the Student Visa health insurance certificate.
Student health insurance dates should be chosen carefully. The policy may need to match the course dates, visa period, arrival date or consulate instructions.
Students should check the course start date; course end date; intended arrival date in Spain; visa appointment date; required policy start date; whether the policy needs to cover the full course; whether annual cover is required; whether a renewal will be needed; and whether the certificate shows the correct dates.
See our guide to the Spanish visa health insurance start date.
Some Student Visa or study authorisation requirements refer to health insurance without copayments, without reimbursement arrangements and without waiting periods.
This matters because some student or international policies may require the student to pay first and claim money back later, or pay extra charges when using covered services. Students should be careful with policies that include reimbursement-only arrangements, copayments, deductibles, excesses, waiting periods, emergency-only cover, limited short-stay cover or unclear certificate wording.
See our guides to no-copay health insurance and no waiting period health insurance.
Some universities, schools or study programmes offer insurance. This may be useful, but it should be checked before relying on it for a visa, residence application or renewal.
University or school insurance may not be suitable if it is travel-style cover; only covers emergencies; is reimbursement-based; has copayments; has waiting periods; does not cover the full course period; does not provide suitable certificate wording; does not cover ordinary healthcare in Spain; or excludes certain ages or course types.
See our guide: can I use university insurance for a Spain Student Visa?
Travel insurance is usually not the right type of cover for a Spanish Student Visa or study residence application. It is designed for temporary trips, emergency treatment, luggage, cancellation and travel disruption.
Students who are living or studying in Spain usually need healthcare cover for the study period, not short-stay holiday cover. Travel insurance can cause problems if it only covers emergency treatment; is short-term; has deductibles or excesses; is reimbursement-based; does not cover ordinary healthcare in Spain; does not provide suitable documentation; or does not cover the full study period.
See our comparison: travel insurance vs visa health insurance for Spain.
Yes, in many cases students can arrange private health insurance before they have an NIE. This is common where insurance is needed before the Student Visa or study authorisation is approved.
Depending on the insurer, passport details may be used first, with the NIE added later if needed. If you do not yet have an NIE, mention this when requesting your quote.
See our guide to Spanish visa health insurance without an NIE.
Students renewing or extending their stay in Spain may need to show continued healthcare cover. This can depend on course continuation, study authorisation type and current healthcare access.
Before renewal, check whether your current policy is still active; whether it covers the renewal period; whether the certificate needs updating; whether the policy still meets renewal requirements; whether your course dates have changed; whether age now affects available options; and whether switching should be done carefully.
See our guide to Student Visa renewal health insurance.
Parents often help arrange health insurance for students moving to Spain. This can be especially important when the student is applying from abroad, has a visa appointment, needs certificate documents or is unsure what the university insurance covers.
Parents should check the student's date of birth; course start and end dates; application country or consulate; whether a Student Visa is needed; whether a certificate is needed; whether the policy must be no-copay; whether university insurance is acceptable; whether insurance can be arranged before an NIE; and whether the student will need renewal cover later.
Urgent student health insurance enquiries are common when students discover close to the appointment that their insurance is missing, university insurance is not suitable, certificate wording is unclear or the policy dates do not match the course.
For urgent help, include the application country or consulate; appointment or submission deadline; course type; course start and end dates; student date of birth; whether the student has an NIE; whether current insurance has been questioned; whether no-copay or no-reimbursement wording is needed; and whether a certificate is required.

Many students need health insurance for a Student Visa, study authorisation, university requirement, renewal or private healthcare access during their studies. The exact need depends on nationality, course type, course duration, application route and current healthcare access.
For a Spanish Student Visa, the policy should usually provide healthcare cover in Spain for the required study period. Depending on the application, it may need to be from an insurer authorised to operate in Spain, avoid copayments or reimbursement-only structures, have no waiting periods and provide a suitable certificate.
Travel insurance is usually not suitable for Spanish Student Visa applications because it is designed for temporary trips and emergencies, not ongoing healthcare access during a study period in Spain.
Sometimes, but it should be checked carefully. University or school insurance may not meet the visa requirement if it is emergency-only, reimbursement-based, has copayments, has waiting periods or does not provide suitable documentation.
Some consulates or applications may require no-copayment cover. If your instructions mention no copayments, make sure this is clear before buying the policy.
Some Student Visa or study authorisation requirements refer to insurance without reimbursement arrangements. If this applies, avoid relying on a policy where the student pays first and claims back later unless it has been confirmed as suitable.
Some Student Visa applications may require health insurance without waiting periods, so that healthcare access is shown from the start date. Waiting periods can affect hospitalisation, surgery, childbirth, advanced diagnostic tests and some specialist services, so check whether no-waiting-period cover is needed.
Students applying for a visa, study authorisation, renewal or university requirement may need written proof of health insurance, often through a certificate or policy document showing the student's name, insurer, start date, cover period and healthcare cover in Spain.
In many cases, yes. Students often arrange insurance before they have an NIE because the policy may be needed for the visa application. Passport details may be used first, depending on insurer rules.
The policy should usually be aligned with the course dates, visa period, arrival date or consulate instructions. Check the course start and end dates, intended arrival date, visa appointment date and required policy start date, and whether annual cover is required.
Yes, mature students may be able to get suitable private health insurance, but standard student products may not always fit. Applicants over 30 or 35 should check options early.
Yes. Parents often help arrange health insurance for students moving to Spain, especially where the student needs a certificate for a visa, course or university requirement.
