Some Spanish visa, residency and Student Visa applications may ask for health insurance without waiting periods.
A waiting period is a delay before certain covered services can be used after the policy starts. For visa purposes, this can be a problem if the application expects immediate healthcare access from the start date.
A policy can start on the correct date but still restrict access to certain services for several months. That is why waiting periods matter for visa files.
We help applicants review private health insurance options for Spain where no-waiting-period cover or suitable certificate wording is required.
A waiting period is a period of time after the policy starts where certain benefits are not yet available.
Waiting periods may apply to services such as hospitalisation, surgery, childbirth, advanced diagnostic tests, specialist treatments, rehabilitation, high-cost procedures and certain pre-planned treatments. For Spanish visa applications, waiting periods can matter because the policy may need to show healthcare access from the start of the visa or residence period.
If a visa application requires health insurance that gives full healthcare access in Spain, waiting periods may create concerns.
A consulate, immigration office, university or adviser may ask for insurance with no waiting periods because they want the policy to be active and usable from the start date. This is especially relevant where the insurance is being used as proof that the applicant will have healthcare access in Spain.

These are two different things. No waiting period means certain covered services may be available from the policy start date. It does not automatically mean the insurer covers existing illnesses, current treatment, recent investigations or previous diagnoses.
Private health insurance usually asks about medical history, and existing conditions may be reviewed by the insurer. When you request a quote, let us know about anything relevant so we can point you towards suitable options.
Applications that ask for no waiting periods often ask for related features too. If yours does, tell us the exact wording and we'll match it. Each of these has its own full guide:
No-copay cover is a separate feature — see no-copay health insurance for Spanish visas. If you need a document that confirms no waiting periods apply, see the health insurance certificate for a Spanish visa.
Many applicants discover the waiting period issue after buying a policy.
This can be a problem if the certificate shows waiting periods; the policy conditions include waiting periods; your application asks for immediate cover; the policy has copayments; the policy is reimbursement-based; the policy is travel insurance; the insurer cannot issue suitable wording; or your appointment is close.
Do not cancel your existing policy until replacement cover has been reviewed and accepted.
You can usually arrange no-waiting-period cover before you have an NIE — passport details may be used first. See health insurance without an NIE.
If your appointment is close, tell us the deadline and we'll prioritise it. See urgent health insurance for a Spanish visa appointment.
