British citizens and Spanish visa health insurance after Brexit

Since Brexit, British citizens applying for many Spanish visa routes should check healthcare evidence carefully, as they are now third-country nationals for these routes. Depending on the route, British applicants may need private health insurance, S1/public healthcare evidence or other documentation. If private health insurance is needed, the policy should be checked for Spain cover, certificate wording, no-copay requirements where requested, proof of payment and start dates. For the main pillar, see visa health insurance Spain.

By route

NLV, DNV and Student Visa for British applicants

For the Non-Lucrative Visa, many British applicants need private cover that is no-copay and certificate-ready — see NLV for UK retirees. On the Digital Nomad Visa, the route depends on worker status — see UK remote workers. UK students usually need private cover for a Student Visa, with student-specific policies up to 35 and a general visa-suitable policy over 35.

S1, GHIC and UK private insurance

Eligible UK pensioners may use an S1 instead of private insurance for public healthcare; those retiring earlier usually need private cover. GHIC/EHIC can help with some healthcare situations but is not the same as visa private insurance, and existing UK private health insurance is usually built around UK healthcare, so a Spanish policy is often clearer.

Couples, families, age and documents

British couples and families usually need cover for each applicant; in a couple, one partner may use an S1 while the other takes private cover. Applicants over 60, 65 and 70 can usually request options subject to eligibility, with pricing rising with age — we do not work with insurers offering new policies for applicants over 75. Keep your certificate and receipt ready. A common mistake is assuming GHIC/EHIC or UK private cover automatically satisfies the visa.

British applicant FAQs

Do British citizens need health insurance for a Spanish visa after Brexit?+

Since Brexit, British citizens are third-country nationals for many Spanish visa routes and often need private health insurance, unless another accepted route such as S1 applies. Check your route.

Can British pensioners use S1?+

Eligible UK state pensioners may be able to use an S1 for public healthcare in Spain. Whether you qualify depends on your pension and circumstances, so check before relying on it.

Can GHIC or EHIC be used for a Spanish visa?+

GHIC or EHIC-type cover may help with certain healthcare situations, but it is not the same as private health insurance for a visa file and should not be assumed to replace it.

Can UK private health insurance be used?+

UK private health insurance is usually built around UK healthcare, so it may not provide the certificate wording or Spain cover a Spanish visa needs. A Spanish policy may be clearer.

Do UK NLV applicants need private health insurance?+

Many UK Non-Lucrative Visa applicants need private health insurance unless they can use an S1 or another accepted route. The policy may need to be no-copay and certificate-ready.

Do UK DNV applicants need private health insurance?+

UK Digital Nomad Visa applicants often need health insurance evidence. Whether private cover is required depends on worker status, social security position and existing cover.

Do UK students need private health insurance?+

UK students usually need private health insurance for a Spanish Student Visa. Student-specific policies are available up to age 35; over 35, a general visa-suitable policy is usually used.

What if I am over 75?+

We do not currently work with insurers offering new private visa-suitable policies for applicants over 75. Over-75 applicants may need to explore public healthcare access, S1 where applicable, existing cover or specialist residency advice.
