Renewing your TIE, residence card or visa-based residence in Spain? We help applicants review private health insurance options, certificates and renewal healthcare evidence.
Takes under two minutes · English-speaking support · No obligation
If your TIE renewal is coming up, you may need to show that you still have healthcare access in Spain.
For some applicants, this may be Spanish public healthcare, social security, S1 entitlement or another recognised route. For others, private health insurance is still needed.
We help TIE renewal applicants check whether their current private health insurance may be suitable, whether an updated certificate is needed, and whether new private health insurance options are available.
Do not cancel your current private health insurance before replacement cover has been accepted. This is general insurance guidance, not legal or immigration advice.
This page is for people who are already resident in Spain and need updated private health insurance evidence for a TIE or residence card renewal. If you are renewing your residence from within the country, your situation is usually a little different from a first application made from abroad.
By the time you renew, you may already hold private cover, you may have gained Spanish public healthcare access through work or another recognised route, and you often need current, active proof rather than brand-new cover. We help you check what you already have, whether an updated certificate is needed, and whether a fresh policy makes sense for your renewal.

Your TIE renewal is not just about the plastic card. It is linked to your residence status in Spain, and healthcare evidence may be part of the renewal file depending on your route.
Health insurance issues can happen when your private policy has expired; your current certificate is out of date; your policy no longer covers the renewal period; your policy has copayments where no-copay cover is expected; dependants are missing from the policy; public healthcare access is unclear; you changed residence route; you moved region; your current insurer cannot provide renewal documentation; you cancelled cover too early; or you want to switch but now have medical history.
The aim is simple: make sure your healthcare evidence is ready before the TIE renewal deadline.

Switching private health insurance before a TIE renewal can be possible, but it should be done carefully.
You may want to switch if your renewal premium has increased; you are paying for cover you do not need; your policy includes copayments; the insurer will not issue the certificate you need; your medical network is poor in your area; you moved to another part of Spain; you want to add a spouse or child; or your current policy was questioned.
But switching can be risky if you are older; you have medical history; you have current treatment; you are waiting for test results; you have an ongoing diagnosis; you need continuous cover for renewal; or your current policy covers something a new insurer may exclude.
Do not cancel your current private health insurance before replacement cover has been reviewed and accepted.

Many TIE renewal applicants need updated proof of healthcare cover. This could be a certificate, policy schedule, proof of payment or confirmation that the policy remains active.
A TIE renewal certificate should usually show the applicant name, insurer name, policy number where available, current policy status, policy start date, cover period or renewal period, healthcare cover in Spain, dependants where included, no-copayment wording where relevant, and insurer details.
See our guide to the health insurance certificate for a Spanish visa.
If your spouse, partner, children or dependants are renewing with you, each person may need healthcare evidence.
Before renewal, check that all applicants are named; dependants are included; children are covered; policy dates cover the renewal period; certificates can be updated; no-copay wording applies where required; older family members are still eligible; no one has been removed from the policy; and policy payments are up to date.
See our guide to family reunification health insurance.
Students renewing their TIE or study stay authorisation in Spain should check that health insurance covers the next study period and that updated proof of cover can be issued.
This is important if the course has been extended; the student has changed course; the student has changed university or school; the current insurance ends too soon; the student is now older than when they first applied; renewal requires no-copay or no-reimbursement wording; or the student originally used university insurance.

For urgent TIE renewal help, include your renewal route; TIE expiry date; appointment or submission deadline; current insurer; policy end date; number of applicants; dates of birth; whether public healthcare is available; whether a certificate is needed; and whether no-copay cover is required.
