NLV health insurance for married couples

Married couples applying for Spain's Non-Lucrative Visa should not assume one insurance certificate covers everything automatically. Each applicant's age, healthcare entitlement, existing cover, S1 position and documentation needs should be checked separately. In many NLV couple applications, both applicants need private health insurance or other recognised healthcare evidence. For the main couples page, see NLV health insurance for couples.

Both applicants

Do both spouses need cover, S1 and different ages

In most NLV couple applications each spouse needs healthcare evidence, even where one is listed as the main applicant and the other as a dependant. It's common for one partner to use an S1 while the other takes private cover, and ages are assessed individually — so a spouse over 65 or over 70 can usually request options subject to eligibility. We do not work with insurers offering new policies for applicants over 75.

Certificates, payment proof and start dates

Each applicant usually needs their own certificate and, where requested, proof of payment. Coordinating the start dates keeps both certificates aligned with the application. Existing UK, US or international cover may not give the wording a Spanish visa needs. A common mistake is buying one policy and assuming it covers both — check each spouse separately.

Married couple NLV FAQs

Do married couples both need health insurance for the NLV?+

In many NLV couple applications, each applicant needs private health insurance or another recognised healthcare route. One certificate does not automatically cover both spouses.

Can one spouse be the main applicant and the other a dependant?+

Yes, but each applicant usually still needs suitable healthcare evidence. Being included as a dependant does not always remove the need for cover.

Can one spouse use S1 and the other private insurance?+

Yes, this is common. One partner may use an S1 for public healthcare while the other arranges private health insurance for the visa file.

Do both spouses need certificates?+

Usually each applicant needs their own certificate or proof of cover showing their name, insurer, cover period and healthcare cover in Spain.

Should both policies have the same start date?+

Coordinating start dates is usually cleaner so both certificates support the same application timeline, though the exact dates can depend on circumstances.

What if one spouse is over 65?+

Each applicant's age is checked separately. An older spouse can usually request options subject to eligibility, with pricing tending to rise with age.

What if one spouse is over 75?+

We do not currently work with insurers offering new private visa-suitable policies for applicants over 75. An over-75 spouse may need to explore public healthcare access, S1 where applicable, existing cover or specialist residency advice.

Can you help married couples get NLV health insurance?+

Yes, send both applicants' ages, S1 status, consulate and deadline and we will help you review private health insurance options for Spain.
