Retiring to Spain on the Non-Lucrative Visa? We help retirees review private health insurance options for Spain, including NLV-suitable and certificate-ready cover where required.

Many people retiring to Spain use the Non-Lucrative Visa route and need to provide healthcare evidence as part of the application. Some retirees may qualify for public healthcare routes such as S1, while others need private health insurance. Before buying, check your age, S1 position, visa route, certificate wording, payment proof and policy start date. For the main NLV page, see NLV health insurance.
The NLV is built for people with income who are not working in Spain, which makes it a common retirement route. Eligible state pensioners may be able to use an S1 instead of private insurance for public healthcare, but many retirees — especially those retiring before state pension age — need private cover for the visa file. Where private cover is required, it often needs to be no-copay and certificate-ready.
Retirees over 65 and over 70 can usually request options subject to eligibility, with pricing rising with age — so check early. We do not work with insurers offering new policies for applicants over 75. In a couple, one partner may use an S1 while the other needs private cover. Confirm the start date and keep certificate and payment proof ready, and check what happens if the visa is refused.
Many retirees need private health insurance for the Non-Lucrative Visa unless they have another accepted healthcare route. The policy may need to be no-copay and certificate-ready.
Some retirees may be able to use an S1 or another accepted public healthcare route, depending on their circumstances. This should be checked before buying private cover.
If you retire before state pension age you may not yet qualify for an S1, so private health insurance is often needed for the NLV until another route applies.
Retirees over 65 can usually request private health insurance options, subject to eligibility. Pricing tends to increase with age, so it is best to check options early.
Retirees over 70 may be able to arrange private health insurance, subject to eligibility. Options and pricing can vary, so check early before the appointment or deadline.
We do not currently work with insurers offering new private visa-suitable policies for applicants over 75. Over-75 applicants may need to explore public healthcare access, S1 where applicable, existing cover or specialist residency advice.
