Entrepreneur Visa applicants and health insurance

Entrepreneur Visa applicants should check what healthcare evidence is required for their specific application. Depending on the route, this may involve private health insurance, public healthcare access, company or employer cover, or another recognised healthcare route. If private health insurance is needed, we help applicants review options for Spain, including certificate-ready documentation where required. See the related self-employed visa and company owner pages.

Founder and startup routes, applying abroad or in Spain

Business founder and startup routes can involve different healthcare positions depending on how and where you apply. Applying from abroad through a consulate often means showing private cover at submission; applying from inside Spain to change status can differ. Company owners and directors may have a particular social security position, so private cover is commonly used where another accepted route does not apply. Family members included usually need their own cover and certificate.

Certificate, existing cover and dates

Where private cover is used, the certificate should clearly show healthcare cover in Spain, and cover can usually be arranged before you have an NIE. Existing international or company insurance is often designed for the home country, so check it for Spain cover; travel insurance is generally not suitable for a residence visa. Choose a sensible policy start date so the certificate supports the appointment. Applicants over 60–70 can usually request options subject to eligibility; we do not work with insurers offering new policies for applicants over 75.

Entrepreneur Visa FAQs

Do Entrepreneur Visa applicants need health insurance in Spain?+

Entrepreneur Visa applicants usually need to show healthcare evidence. Depending on the route this may be private health insurance, public healthcare access, company cover or another accepted route.

Can international insurance be used?+

International insurance may help in some cases, but it should be checked for clear Spain cover, certificate wording and policy dates before relying on it for the application.

Can company insurance be used?+

Company or business insurance may help, but it is often designed for the home country and may not provide clear Spain cover or a suitable certificate. Check the wording carefully.

Do family members need health insurance?+

Family members included in the application usually need their own healthcare evidence, such as private health insurance with a certificate for each person.

Can I arrange cover before NIE?+

Private health insurance can often be arranged before you have an NIE, usually using passport details, with the NIE added later where needed.

Does the certificate need to mention Spain?+

The certificate should usually show clear healthcare cover in Spain for the visa period. A certificate that does not mention Spain may be questioned.

What if I am over 75?+

We do not currently work with insurers offering new private visa-suitable policies for applicants over 75. Over-75 applicants may need to explore public healthcare access, existing cover or specialist residency advice.

Can you help entrepreneur visa applicants review options?+
