Quick answer: do Chilean citizens need health insurance to move to Spain?

Many Chilean citizens moving to Spain need to show suitable health insurance as part of a Spanish visa, residency or renewal process. For routes such as the Student Visa, Digital Nomad Visa, Non-Lucrative Visa and family applications, this often means private health insurance from an insurer authorised to operate in Spain, with a certificate or clear proof for the appointment.

Chilean domestic health insurance, travel insurance, employer cover and some international policies may help in certain situations, but they are not automatically suitable for Spanish visa purposes. The key question is whether the policy meets the Spanish visa requirements and can provide clear proof for your consulate or residency appointment.

Please note: we do not currently work with insurers that offer new visa-suitable private health insurance policies for applicants over 75. If you are over 75, you may need to explore public healthcare access or specialist residency advice based on your circumstances.

This is general insurance guidance, not legal or immigration advice. Requirements can vary by visa type, consulate and applicant circumstances.

A common misunderstanding

Can Chilean health insurance be used for a Spanish visa?

This is the biggest Chilean-specific question, so it’s worth being clear. Chilean domestic health insurance is usually designed around treatment in Chile. Some policies may include limited international or emergency cover, but those emergency international benefits are not the same as Spanish residence health insurance. The insurer may not be authorised to operate in Spain, the certificate wording may not match consulate requirements, and reimbursement-style cover may not be accepted where direct comprehensive cover is expected.

In Chile you may have Fonasa or Isapre cover, or private health insurance. These can be useful at home, but are not automatically suitable for a Spanish visa.

So don’t assume that “I already have health insurance” means the policy is visa-suitable. For a Spanish visa or residency application, what counts is whether the policy matches the route’s requirements and whether the insurer can provide the right proof — and if it can’t, a separate visa-suitable policy is usually simpler.

A Chilean health insurance policy may be useful in Chile and may include some international emergency benefits, but that does not automatically make it suitable for a Spanish visa. For a Spanish visa or residency application, the focus is on whether the policy matches the route’s requirements and whether the insurer can provide the right proof.

For the wider comparison, see our international vs Spanish visa insurance guide.

Not the same thing

Can Chilean citizens use travel insurance for a Spanish visa?

Usually not for a residence visa. Travel insurance is for temporary trips — it may cover emergencies, cancellations and baggage, which is useful for a short visit but not what a Spanish residence visa is looking for. Residence routes usually need ongoing healthcare cover, often from an insurer authorised in Spain, and a travel policy may not be from such an insurer or include the wording a consulate expects.

Two specific traps to avoid: Schengen travel insurance is for short-stay travel, not residence, and student travel insurance may not meet long-stay Student Visa rules. For a Student Visa, DNV, NLV or residency route, check the requirements before relying on a travel policy. Our travel insurance vs visa health insurance guide explains the difference.

Existing cover

Can Chilean citizens use employer or international health insurance?

Sometimes, but it must be checked carefully — this is especially relevant for the Digital Nomad Visa and work-related routes. Employer policies may be designed for travel or emergency assignments rather than residence, family members may not be included automatically, and the insurer may not be authorised in Spain. Copayments, deductibles, waiting periods and reimbursement terms all matter, and the certificate wording may not match Spanish visa requirements.

Employer or international health insurance can sound strong, but Spanish visa applications are document-led. If the policy cannot prove the required cover in the right format, a separate Spanish visa-suitable policy may be simpler.

Our international vs Spanish visa insurance guide covers this in detail.

What it must show

What health insurance may need to show for Chilean citizens

Where private cover is needed, the checklist opposite is the common pattern. The exact requirements depend on the route and the office handling the application, but the principle is the same: the policy has to meet the documentation requirements, with details matching the Chilean passport used for the application.

The exact wording requested can vary depending on the Spanish consulate or office handling the application, so it is important to match the policy certificate to the route and appointment checklist.

For the detail, see our visa health insurance requirements page, the health insurance certificate and proof of cover guides, and the no-copay and no-waiting-period pages.

Chilean applicant cover should usually show:

Insurer authorised to operate in Spain
Suitable private healthcare cover
Valid for the required visa or residency period
Cover for risks insured by Spain’s public healthcare system, where required
No copayments / no deductible, where required
No waiting periods and not reimbursement-only, where required
A certificate or proof of cover
Proof of payment, where requested
All family members covered
Details matching the Chilean passport used for the application
By route

The cover should match the route you’re applying under. Here’s the short version for the main Chilean routes.

Student

Chilean citizens applying for the Student Visa

The Student Visa is one of the most common routes for Chilean citizens moving to Spain. Health insurance is often checked carefully, especially for long-stay study programmes. The policy may need to show no copayments, no reimbursement structure and no waiting periods where required.

DNV

Chilean citizens applying for the Digital Nomad Visa

Chilean remote workers, freelancers and company owners may need to show public or private healthcare evidence. Employer, Chilean or international cover should be checked carefully against Spanish authorisation and certificate requirements.

NLV

Chilean citizens applying for the Non-Lucrative Visa

Chilean financially independent applicants may need private health insurance from an insurer authorised in Spain, with clear proof of cover for the application.

A common worry

Can Chilean citizens arrange health insurance before getting an NIE?

Usually, yes. A policy and certificate can normally be arranged using your Chilean passport details before you have an NIE — which is exactly what many Chilean applicants need when preparing a Student Visa, DNV or NLV application from Chile. The certificate can show your Chilean passport details, and the insurer may be able to update them later depending on their process. So not having an NIE yet rarely holds up your insurance arrangements. Our health insurance without an NIE page explains how it works.

Chilean students

Health insurance for Chilean students moving to Spain

The Student Visa is a major route for Chilean citizens, so this matters. Student Visa applicants often need suitable private health insurance, and university or school insurance may need checking — student travel insurance is not always enough. The policy dates should match the study period, and the certificate wording matters. Mature students may need different options, and family dependants should be checked separately.

Our student visa health insurance page covers the route in full, and our health insurance certificate guide explains the documentation side.

Chilean families

Health insurance for Chilean families moving to Spain

When a Chilean family moves together, every applicant may need cover, and children should be named on the documents with passport details that match. Watch one common trap: employer or international cover may not include dependants properly, so don’t assume one person’s policy covers the whole family. Family applications also need careful attention to dates and certificates, and different surnames or mixed-nationality situations should be checked carefully.

Many Chilean applicants prepare their Spanish visa application while still in Chile, before they have an NIE or Spanish bank account, so it is important that the insurance certificate can be issued using Chilean passport details.

Cover can often be arranged for the whole family on Chilean passport details before NIEs are issued. Our families moving to Spain page covers couples and dependants in more detail.

Older applicants

Health insurance for older Chilean applicants

Age affects available options. Over-65 and over-70 applicants should check early, as medical history may need review and visa-suitable cover can be more limited than ordinary cover. The key is not to delay until the appointment week. Our over-65, over-70 and retiree guides go into the age-specific detail.

Applicants over 75: we do not currently arrange new private cover for over-75s, but we can still help any family members aged 75 or under.

Avoid these

Common health insurance mistakes Chilean citizens make

Most Chilean-specific problems come back to one of these.

Assuming Chilean health insurance is enough

It’s designed for treatment in Chile, not Spanish residence.

Buying Schengen travel insurance for a residence visa

Schengen cover is for short visits, not residence.

Relying on emergency overseas cover

Emergency-only benefits aren’t ongoing residence healthcare.

Using employer cover without checking authorisation

It may not be from an insurer authorised in Spain.

Not checking whether family members are included

Dependants aren’t always covered automatically.

Buying a cheap copay policy

It may not meet a route that expects no copayments.

Not checking waiting periods

Some routes expect no waiting periods for required care.

Not getting a proper certificate

The appointment usually needs documented proof of cover.

Assuming an NIE is needed first

Cover can usually be arranged on passport details.

Leaving it until the appointment week

Suitable cover and certificates take time to arrange.

Chilean citizen health insurance FAQs

Do Chilean citizens need health insurance to move to Spain?+

Many do, in some form. For routes such as the Student Visa, Digital Nomad Visa, Non-Lucrative Visa and family applications, Chilean citizens often need to show suitable health insurance as part of the application — frequently private cover from an insurer authorised to operate in Spain, with a certificate or clear proof for the appointment. Chilean domestic health insurance, travel insurance, employer cover and some international policies may help in certain situations, but they aren’t automatically suitable for Spanish visa purposes. The key question is whether the policy meets the Spanish visa requirements and can provide clear proof for your consulate or residency appointment.

Can Chilean citizens use Chilean health insurance for a Spanish visa?+

Not normally on its own. Chilean domestic health insurance is usually designed around treatment in Chile, and although some policies include limited international or emergency cover, those emergency benefits are not the same as Spanish residence health insurance. The insurer may not be authorised to operate in Spain, the certificate wording may not match consulate requirements, and reimbursement-style cover may not be accepted where direct comprehensive cover is expected. So don’t assume that already having health insurance makes the policy visa-suitable — check whether it matches the route’s requirements and whether the insurer can provide the right proof, and arrange a separate visa-suitable policy if it can’t.

Can Chilean citizens use travel insurance for a Spanish residence visa?+

In most cases, no. Travel insurance is designed for temporary trips and may cover emergencies, cancellations and baggage, but Spanish residence visas usually need ongoing healthcare cover, often from an insurer authorised to operate in Spain. Schengen travel insurance is for short-stay travel, not residence, and a travel policy may not be from such an insurer or include the certificate wording a consulate expects. Student travel insurance, in particular, may not meet long-stay Student Visa rules. For a Student Visa, DNV, NLV or residency route, check the requirements before relying on a travel policy.

What health insurance do Chilean students need for Spain?+

Chilean Student Visa applicants often need suitable private health insurance, especially for long-stay study programmes. University or school insurance may need checking, and ordinary student travel insurance is not always enough. The policy dates should match the study period, and the certificate wording matters — many student routes expect no copayments, no reimbursement-only structure and no waiting periods where required. Mature students may have different options, and any family dependants should be checked separately. See our student visa health insurance guide for the detail, and check your specific programme and consulate requirements.

Can Chilean citizens use employer or international health insurance for the Digital Nomad Visa?+

Possibly, but it must be checked carefully — this is most relevant for DNV and work-related routes. Employer policies may be designed for travel or emergency assignments rather than residence, family members may not be included automatically, and the insurer may not be authorised in Spain. Copayments, deductibles, waiting periods and reimbursement terms all matter, and the certificate wording may not match Spanish visa requirements. Employer or international cover can sound strong, but Spanish visa applications are document-led — if the policy can’t prove the required cover in the right format, a separate Spanish visa-suitable policy may be simpler.

Can Chilean citizens arrange Spanish health insurance without an NIE?+

Usually yes. A policy and certificate can normally be arranged using your Chilean passport details before you have an NIE, which is common for Chilean applicants preparing a Student Visa, DNV or NLV application from Chile. The certificate can show your Chilean passport details, and the insurer may be able to update them later depending on their process. So not having an NIE yet rarely holds up your insurance arrangements. See our health insurance without an NIE guide for how this works in practice.

Do Chilean families moving to Spain need cover for every applicant?+

Generally, yes. Every applicant may need cover, and children should be named on the documents with passport details that match. Employer or international cover may not include dependants properly, so don’t assume one policy covers the whole family — check it applicant by applicant. Family applications need careful attention to dates and certificates, and different surnames, dual nationality or mixed nationalities should be checked carefully. Cover can often be arranged for the whole family on Chilean passport details before NIEs are issued. Tell us who’s moving and we’ll help you check that each applicant is covered and named for the application.

Do Chilean applicants need no-copay health insurance for Spain?+

It depends on the route. Some routes — the Non-Lucrative Visa in particular, and many Student Visa situations — commonly expect cover with no copayments and no waiting periods, while others may be less strict. Because the requirement varies, confirm what your specific route and consulate expect, then make sure the policy and certificate reflect those features where required. Don’t assume a cheaper copay policy will be accepted if your route needs no copayments — check first, because replacing an unsuitable policy close to an appointment is stressful and avoidable.

Can Chilean citizens over 75 get Spanish visa health insurance through you?+

We do not currently work with insurers that offer new visa-suitable private health insurance policies for applicants over 75. If you are over 75, you may need to explore Spanish public healthcare access or specialist residency advice based on your route and circumstances. We’d rather be clear about this upfront than take details for a policy we can’t currently arrange. For applicants aged 75 or under, we can help check suitable visa-focused options for the Student Visa, DNV, NLV, residency and other routes.

When should Chilean citizens arrange health insurance before moving to Spain?+

Usually before the visa appointment, and often before approval, because the insurance is commonly part of the application itself. The appointment checklist frequently expects proof of cover, so waiting until after approval can leave you without the document the consulate wants to see. For students, line the policy dates up with the study period. Choose your start date carefully, keep the certificate and proof of payment, and ask about cancellation or refund terms if the visa is refused. Older applicants in particular should start early, as suitable options can take longer to arrange.
