Why DNV health insurance depends on worker status

Digital Nomad Visa health insurance is not always the same for every applicant. An employee, freelancer, contractor or company owner may need different healthcare evidence depending on their social security position, employer cover, private insurance and dependants. If private insurance is needed, the policy and certificate should be checked before submission. For the main DNV page, see Digital Nomad Visa health insurance and the DNV requirements.

By worker type

Employees, freelancers, contractors and company owners

Employees applying through a foreign employer often need private health insurance unless an accepted social security or public healthcare route applies. Freelancers frequently need private cover unless they register for Spanish social security or have another accepted route. Contractors are usually treated by how they are engaged and their social security position, while company owners and directors may have a different position again — private cover is commonly used to support the DNV file where needed.

Employer cover, dependants and certificates

Employer insurance can help in some cases, but it is often designed for the home country and may not give the certificate wording or Spain cover the DNV needs. Where the social security or public healthcare route does not apply, private health insurance is used instead. Dependants included on a DNV application usually need their own certificate and proof of payment where requested. A common mistake is assuming employer cover automatically satisfies the DNV.
