What documents are usually needed?

Useful documents may include a health insurance certificate, policy schedule, proof of payment, receipt or paid invoice, confirmation of active cover, proof of no-copay cover where required, proof of no waiting periods where required, and repatriation wording where requested.

Document by document

The main health insurance documents

Health insurance certificate

The certificate is usually the main document. It should clearly confirm the applicant name, insurer, policy dates, cover period and healthcare cover in Spain. See the certificate guide.

Policy document

The policy schedule or document may include fuller terms, conditions and the list of insured persons.

Receipt or proof of payment

A receipt or paid invoice shows the policy has been paid or activated. See certificate and receipt.

Proof of active cover

For renewals especially, confirmation that the policy is active for the required period may be requested.

By visa route

Documents for NLV, DNV, Student Visa, families and renewals

For the Non-Lucrative Visa, documents are often checked closely and may need full private cover with no-copay wording. For the Digital Nomad Visa, healthcare evidence depends on whether you rely on private insurance, social security or employer cover. For a Student Visa, you may need a certificate or proof of payment covering the study period. Families and dependants may need documents for each applicant, and renewals may need updated proof of active cover.

Before NIE & questioned docs

Documents before NIE and if your documents are questioned

Many applicants arrange private health insurance before having an NIE because proof of insurance may be needed for the visa application — passport details may be used first. See health insurance without an NIE. If your documents have been questioned, check the reason before resending them; the issue may be wording, policy dates, proof of payment, no-copay wording or the type of insurance. See what to do if the consulate asks for better insurance.
